  4. ornate, markedly so in architecture, and
  5. Victorian Gothic drew upon the original
  6. Gothic architecture of medieval times. It was
  7. also an era when increasing mass-production
  8. by machines threatened the existence of
  9. crafts and craft skills. Despite the
  10. popularity of extravagant decoration,
  11. Renaissance styles were also favoured and
  12. many people such as John Ruskin, believed in
  13. designing objects and architecture primarily
  14. for their function, and not for appearance.
