The mid- and late 19th century in England,
covering the reign of Queen Victoria
1837-1901. Victorian style was often very
ornate, markedly so in architecture, and
Victorian Gothic drew upon the original
Gothic architecture of medieval times. It was
also an era when increasing mass-production
by machines threatened the existence of
crafts and craft skills. Despite the
popularity of extravagant decoration,
Renaissance styles were also favoured and
many people such as John Ruskin, believed in
designing objects and architecture primarily
for their function, and not for appearance.
